Montalcino is a small town in Tuscany, situated to the West of Pienza, about 120 km south of Florence and 153 km from Rome. This charming untouched medieval village is set in the silence of the forest and countryside on the top of the hill (564 meters above the sea level). It is surrounded by olive groves and offers a stunning view over the Brunello vineyards and Val d'Orcia Natural park, famous all over the world for the production of one of Italy's best-known and most expensive wines, Brunello di Montalcino, a red wine produced with 100% Sangiovese grapes. It was invented one century ago by Ferruccio Biondi -Santi and it is the only pure Sangiovese wine in Tuscany. Brunello di Montalcino is awarded the first DOCG designarion (Denominazione di origine controllata e Garantita).Montalcino is known not only for wine. It is also a historical center with many examples of well-preserved medieval Tuscan architectures. The most famous sites to see are Sant'Agostino church, the Duomo, dedicated to San Salvatore and the impressive fourteenth century fortress built at the highest point of the town.
HOW TO REACH AREA
Montalcino is located near the town of Siena and the fastest way to reach it is by car. Driving through the countryside is a stunning landscape experience. If you come from Florence, you can choose the highway (direction Siena, exit at “Siena South”). Then take the road SS2 and exit in Montalcino. If you come from Rome, take the A1 highway and exit at Valdichiana. Proceed to Sinalunga, Trequanda, Montisi, San Giovanni d’Asso, Torrenieri until Montalcino.
Those coming by plane can fly to Pisa, Florence, Rome or Milan. Pisa and Florence Airports are the closest ones to Montalcino.
It is also very easy to reach Montalcino by train from Siena, Florence and Pisa. There are several trains per day. The closest train station to Montalcino is Buonconvento (10 km) and there is a bus station nearby where you can take the bus to reach the town. There are only 4 trains that go directly from Florence to Buonconvento: all the others go to Siena and you will need to take the bus from there to Montalcino.Those travelling from Florence can take a bus to Siena and then from Siena to Montalcino. The Florence bus station is close to Santa Maria Novella railway station.
