Volterra is a town in the province of Pisa, Tuscany. It is about 50 kilometers away from Florence and is also close to Siena and San Gimignano. Its history counts more than three thousand years. Volterra was once an Etruscan settlement and the archaeological finds discovered in the area date back to the IXth century BC. The impressive Porta all’Arco, the Necropolis of Marmini and countless archaeological finds can now be admired in the Museo Etrusco Guarnacci. Volterra is also known as a "museum-town", where the memory of different epochs is in front of your eyes, where medieval and renaissance buildings are there next to the Roman theater and Etruscan sites. Volterra truly is a unique and enriching historical experience.
Lucca is a town on the river Serchio, located in northern part of Tuscany. Lucca is right at the feet of the Apuan Alps but at the same time is also close to the Tuscan coast.
The town of Lucca was founded in Roman times and developed through the Middle Ages all the way to the Napoleonic era and Risorgimento. Every monument, church and palace in Lucca has a story to tell. This ancient city will bring you back in time to the era when knights used to ride their horses on the still intact town walls.
The territory of Lucca is home to countless other wonders: from Lake Massaciuccoli to the thermal springs of Bagni di Lucca and the coastal dunes of the Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli Natural Park.

HOW TO REACH AREA
If you decide to reach Volterra by car there are various roads to choose from: the fastest way is to take the A1 Highway (exit at Firenze Impruneta), then proceed to Siena (exit at "Colle Val d'Elsa") and follow the signs to Volterra. It is also possible to take the motorway FI-PI-LI (Firenze-Pisa-Livorno) to Florence (exit at Pontedera-Ponsacco). Next you have to follow the signs in direction of Capannoli, La Sterza and then finally to Volterra.
To get to Volterra by bus you can take several lines from Cecina, Pontedera and Colle Val d’Elsa. Coming from Florence or Siena, it is possible to get on the bus to Colle Val d’Elsa and then change to the bus to Volterra. When coming from Pisa there is a possibility to take a train to Pondera and then change to the bus to Volterra.
The train connection to Volterra is not very convenient, as the nearest station is Saline di Volterra, 10 km away from the town. Most people choose to go to Pontedera, Colle or Cecina by train and then take a bus to Volterra. If you arrive to Italy by plane, the closest airport is in Pisa , 65 km away from the town.
Lucca is very easy to reach, with all kinds of transport. If you arrive by plane, there are two airports nearby. The Pisa international airport “Galileo Galilei” and Florence International Airport "Amerigo Vespucci". From both of them there is a very comfortable direct connection by train. To reach Lucca by car, the best way is to use A11 motorway (Firenze-Mare) and exit at Lucca. It is also possible to reach A11 highway from A1 and A12 motorways too. If you choose to travel by bus, you will easily find connections from all the cities in the neighbourhood.Relais Mommi
